BANFF – A 29-year-old man who had been missing from Banff since April 19 was found dead at the base of Banff’s Tunnel Mountain on Sunday morning (May 5).

Banff RCMP say the death is not suspicious, but last week issued a media release calling for the public’s help in locating Mike Ilagan amid concern for his well-being.

“Foul play is not suspected and our condolences go out to his friends and family,” said Staff Sgt Mike Buxton-Carr, detachment commander of Banff RCMP.

Buxton-Carr said two climbers were preparing to climb a route on Tunnel Mountain on Sunday morning when they came across the body.

He said Parks Canada’s visitor safety team was called in to retrieve Ilagan’s body.

“Parks ended up bringing him out by helicopter,” he said.

Buxton-Carr said Ilagan was reported missing to Banff RCMP by a supervisor at Sunshine Village staff accommodation on April 27.

“He was missing, they were concerned and they did the right thing to reach out to us,” he said.

Ilagan, a Filipino male, was last seen April 19, 2024, at Sunshine Village.

A social media post from Dave Riley, Sunshine Village’s chief operating officer and senior vice-president, said Sunshine Village has fully cooperated with RCMP in their investigation.

He said Ilagan was last seen boarding a bus from Sunshine to Banff, adding this information was provided to the RCMP.
