Banff's Whyte Museum welcomes new CEO

The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies will have a new CEO.

BANFF – The Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies will have a new CEO.

David Cox was named the new head of the popular Banff-based museum, with long-time CEO Donna Livingstone retiring this spring. Cox will take over June 17.

“We are delighted that David will be bringing his strong leadership skills and knowledge of the community to the Whyte at this exciting point in our development,” said Don Watkins, chair of the board of directors of the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation.

Cox previously served on the Whyte Museum’s board of directors from 2013-19, according to a media release. He has also served in leadership roles at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity as vice president and general counsel.

The media release noted Cox has been a Banff resident for the past 16 years.

“I look forward to the next chapter in the development of this remarkable organization while honouring the legacy of Peter and Catharine Whyte,” Cox said in a media release.

Formed in 1968, the museum was established by Peter and Catharine Whyte with a collection of art, artifacts, photography, archival materials and Indigenous stories showcased.

Livingstone retires having guided the museum through the COVID-19 pandemic, prioritizing a focus on connecting people to nature and establishing the museum’s reputation with exhibitions and new collaborations.

She assumed the role in 2019 after having spent six years at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary.

“We are very grateful for the tremendous contribution Donna has made,” said Watkins. “She brought a fresh way of thinking and a warm connection to the community. We can’t thank her enough.”
