Collective to play Flood This fundraiser

You don’t always think music when pondering Canmore Rotary, but the local service organization is hooking up with local band The Hillside Collective for a flood relief fundraiser at the Canmore Legion, Saturday (Aug. 17).

You don’t always think music when pondering Canmore Rotary, but the local service organization is hooking up with local band The Hillside Collective for a flood relief fundraiser at the Canmore Legion, Saturday (Aug. 17).

Dubbed “Flood This,” Hillside Collective will provide an evening’s entertainment, with a couple of guests, with funds collected going to the Rotary Flood Relief Fund.

Doors open at 8 p.m., with the show at 9 p.m. Guests include local Joe Ernewein and Ralf Buschmeyer from Mount Royal’s jazz diploma program.

Hillside Collective, who scored a slot at the recent Canmore Folk Music Festival pub in the Miners’ Hall, is Hugh Dunbar (fiddle, vocals), David Gilhen (mandolin, vocals), Brent Seetram (guitar, vocals), Margaret Tennet (banjo, vocals) and Pat Cloutier (standup bass). Buschmeyer will also sit in to make the Collective a six-piece.

Hillside Collective has been playing locally and, with members spread around the valley, had some insight into the difficulties the June flooding caused.

“Dave and Pat are both in K-Country and they were hit pretty hard,” said Dunbar. “They were stuck for quite a few days and know what it was like.

“We started with Exshaw as a focus because it seemed like they were really hit hard and weren’t getting much help. But we’re not millionaires, we can’t just cut a cheque for $5,000, so we thought we’d help those in need in our own way.”

Dunbar and Buschmeyer also play in local band TR3 and thought that group might get something going, but several members couldn’t make the commitment.

Hillside Collective then stepped up to offer their country music/Americana stylings.

Funds raised at Flood This will go into Canmore Rotary’s flood fund for general disbursement in the valley.
