I am shocked. It’s been almost five years since Canmore has implemented the Vanlife – also known as the Safe Park program – and we are still dealing with a shortage of (underpaid) employees in the community. How is that possible?

Seriously, I've been in the Bow Valley for more than 10 years, and it’s like Groundhog Day over and over and over and it seems to be a big surprise every time. Still, nothing is done. Living without a car in the Bow Valley is not realistic as we, underpaid employees, want to explore the area. And I’m not living here so I can stay home and spend my days off watching Disney+ or Netflix and living with four adults in a room is not an option either.

Again, people like me, who are living in their camper, asking nothing else but to be left alone – just like I’m leaving everybody else alone – are being denied that freedom.

The main reason why people come here is to work hard and play hard. Let us be, and we will be happy to be part of the solution.

Sylvain Charest,

Canmore
