BANFF – A 22-year-old man from Banff charged with possession of child pornography made his first appearance in Canmore Provincial Court last week.

The case started in 2018 when Banff RCMP investigated allegations that a man possessed child pornography material, Sgt. Michael Buxton-Carr said.

“The Banff RCMP executed a search warrant and seized a computer from the suspect,” Buxton-Carr said.

The staff sergeant confirmed the RCMP have been working on the case for a couple of years and it was thanks to new information they received earlier this year when they were finally able to move forward with the investigation.

With help from the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit, a forensic examination of the computer was completed earlier this month and RCMP subsequently charged the man.

The 22-year-old is charged with two counts of possessing child pornography and one count of accessing child pornography.

Due to a publication ban in place to protect the victim(s), the name of the accused cannot be revealed at this time.

The man made his first appearance in court on March 20 and the matter was adjourned to the end of April.
