According to Banff’s recently released 2018 community social assessment, lower wages and higher housing costs are the reasons this is considered the tourist town’s most significant social challenge.

BANFF – Five applications for cannabis retail shops are being forwarded to Banff’s Municipal Planning Commission for decision.

Banff Cannabis Inc. is asking for a variance for its proposed cannabis retail store in the basement of 117 Banff Ave. because it’s less than 100 metres away from the Banff Rundle Playschool.

Alcanna Cannabis Stores’ application to open up in the former Internet café in the basement of the Sundance Mall at 215 Banff Ave. indicates the location is 112 metres from the boundary of the Banff Community High School.

Dave Michaels, a development planner with the Town of Banff, said none of the five stores are in conflict with the 30-metre separation distance between stores, so a lottery is not required.

“As we process and review the applications, we will confirm that the applications meet the separation distances required by the Land Use Bylaw,” said Michaels, noting the applications possibly could be before MPC as early as February.

An Alberta numbered company, 2104944, has applied for a change of use for the former Great Canadian Dollar Store location at 203B Bear St. This application requires façade renovations because retail stores cannot have sidewalk-facing windows.

Starbuds has applied for retail at its Compass Cannabis Clinic location in the basement of the Lux Cinema building at 229 Bear St., and Westleaf Retail in the former nightclub Hoodoo Lounge.

In November, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) commission suspended processing new applications due to a national shortage of cannabis and said it wouldn’t issue any additional cannabis retail licences until further notice.
