BANFF – Soon patrons of Banff Ave Brewing Company will be able to get fan favourites black pilsner and white wit in their local liquor store.

The brewery is offering both brews in cans starting at the end of May at the brew pub store, with liquor stores across the province to follow.

“There was a debate on a few beers, but we really pushed for the wit knowing our clientele,” said Meesh Souliere, general manager of the Banff Ave Brewing Company.

Both beers will be produced and canned off-site in Calgary through a contract brewing company.

Miranda Batterink, head brewer for the brew pub said that this won’t impact the quality that customers have come to expect.

“For anyone who doesn’t know about contract brewing, we’re basically renting equipment,” she said.

“For us it’s a way to tap into a new market.”

Both Batterink and Souliere hope the canned beers will reach new customers who will eventually want to come and visit Banff.

“So say if someone in Edmonton picks up this beer, really enjoys it and is like ‘oh, I had no idea that Banff had a brew pub.’ That helps the pub out, and we hopefully get to carry the brew pub experience outside of Banff,” said Batterink.

The brew pub is also hoping that Banff’s reputation as a fun destination translates into new customers trying both beers.

“Someone might see that can on the shelf and think ‘I had the best night of my life in Banff, I’m going to pick up a six pack,’ ” said Batterink.

Souliere says that there is an already built in marketplace for the black pil in Ontario, with many requests on social media originating from that province for the beer.

Still, she said not to expect the brews outside of Alberta anytime soon, but that the owners of Banff Ave Brewing Co – Bearhill Brewing – are working on expanding all of their canned offerings across Canada.

The black pill will come in a black can with a bear cub climbing a stylized tree, and the white wit will come in a vibrant blue can emblazoned with an elk.

The designs are strikingly different from sister brewery Jasper Brewing Company, which went with simple geometric shapes on their brews.

“I think with the blue can it’s going to be bam,” said Souliere.

The design of the cans fits in with the rebranding of the Banff Ave Brewing Co logo, utilizing strong bauhaus school influences.
