Police wanting to speak to woman as part of investigation into potential serious incident at Johnston Canyon

“Right now, all that I am able to provide is that there was a potential suspicious incident."

BANFF – Banff RCMP is seeking the public’s help in its investigation into a “potentially suspicious activity” at Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park on Sunday afternoon.

Police have released a photo of a woman they are looking to identify and speak with who was at the canyon at the time of this potential incident at 3:30 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 5) as part of this ongoing investigation.

“Right now, all that I am able to provide is that there was a potential suspicious incident,” said Corporal Candace Hrdlicka with Alberta RCMP Media Relations Group.

“They are still investigating and it hasn’t been confirmed.”

Tim Nokes, whose family owns Johnston Canyon Lodge and Bungalows, said police indicated a 911 call had been made that could involve potential foul play.

“At this stage they are trying to decide whether it’s a prank call or there’s more substance to it,” he said.

The Johnston Canyon trail to the lower falls has been taped off by police and is off limits to the public; however, the upper section can still be accessed by hikers via Moose Meadows and the Ink Pots.

Roam Public Transit has suspended service on Route 9, which includes Johnston Canyon, until further notice.

“The RCMP have advised Roam not to bring any passengers to Johnston Canyon right now,” stated a Roam Facebook post Monday morning.

“For anyone at JC, a bus is on route for pick up only.”

Anyone able to identify the woman RCMP is wanting to speak with, or may have been in the area around this time, is asked to contact Banff RCMP at 403-763-6600 or your local police.
