AltaLink is planning four power outages between Banff and Lake Louise starting July 10 to September 30.

BANFF – Residents and businesses west of Banff can expect four power outages from now until the end of September, as Altalink rebuilds its existing transmission line.

The first power outage will occur on Wednesday (July 10) between midnight and 4 a.m. and impact areas west of Banff, including Sunshine Village and Lake Louise.

Three more power outages will occur later in July, mid-August and near the end of September.

“The schedule for the power outages is dependent on several factors, so we will be posting updates on our Twitter account as each outage is confirmed,” wrote Amanda Sadleir, a senior communications manager with AltaLink.

She said the company is replacing the existing transmission line to Lake Louise in an effort to improve electricity reliability for that community.

Lake Louise has a history of power outages, as the power line infrastructure dates back to the 1960s and is in need of updating.

In 2017, a power outage at the Lake Louise Ski Resort almost led to the cancellation of an FIS World Cup alpine ski race.
