BANFF – One person was taken to hospital after a snowmobile accident at Sunshine Village Tuesday (April 9) morning.

Security camera footage shared widely on social media shows someone holding onto a snowmobile as it takes off at a high rate of speed before crashing into the loading station of the Angel Express chairlift.

Alberta Heath Services said paramedics were called to the hill around 10:30 a.m. and transported one female with non-life threatening injuries to Banff Mineral Springs Hospital.

Kendra Scurfield, brand and communications manager at Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard resort, said they believe the woman accidentally grabbed the throttle while attempting to climb onto a snowmobile.

“We did have an incident with a guest who accidentally grabbed onto the handle bar of a Ski-Doo,” she said.

“We believe it was an accident in getting on. We do wish that the person recovers as best as possible.”

STARS tweeted around 11 a.m. they had been called in to Banff, but later told the Outlook they were called off before arriving.

Scurfield said the investigation into the incident is ongoing and that no other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
