BANFF – An infant wading pool at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel that was shut down by provincial health authorities for unsafe levels of bacteria contamination was reopened Sunday (Nov. 4).

The pool was closed three days earlier after Alberta Health Services indicated two water samples taken on Oct. 22 and Oct. 29 contained coliform levels that “are or may become injurious or dangerous to the public health”.

“The pool was open as of Sunday,” said Angela Moore, Fairmont’s regional director of communications.

As part of AHS’s Nov. 1 notice of closure, the hotel was ordered to treat the pool to eliminate any possible source of contamination and chemically balance the pool water. In addition, they had to submit a bacteriological sample to the provincial laboratory.

The closure notice indicated the Oct. 22 sample contained more than 50 times the provincial limit for coliforms in swimming pool water, while the Oct. 29 test was about five times above the acceptable standard.
