UPDATED: Alberta RCMP crafts vehicle valentines to fight theft

"I want you to be mine, Valentine! Stay with me while I am running."

Updated with the RCMP's latest Valentine message

The Alberta RCMP has launched a new campaign to help Albertans keep their vehicles safe from thieves.

With Valentine's Day coming up, the RCMP said it will be "playing cupid" in February by sending out social media Valentines containing tips on how to reduce the chances of your vehicle being stolen.

Check back throughout the week to see all of the RCMP's Valentines.

Thieves stole almost 10,000 vehicles last year in areas policed by the Alberta RCMP, including almost 700 in February 2019. The RCMP stated in a Feb. 4 news release more than 6,500 of those thefts involved trucks, SUVs or vans. Just over 1,200 of the thefts involved cars.

While vehicle thefts went down by five per cent between 2018 and 2019, "there is still room for improvement," the RCMP stated.

The RCMP encourages the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity. Reports tell officers where to look, who to look for and where to patrol in the future. If you see a crime in progress, dial 911. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.

How to keep your vehicle safe

  • Lock the doors and remove the keys;
  • If you plan to start your car to warm it up, have a remote starter or stay with the vehicle;
  • Remove all valuables;
  • Use a steering wheel lock;
  • Lock your garage;
  • Remove your garage door opener from your vehicle;
  • Use a vehicle tracking system;
  • Park in a well-lit area.
