Bridge collapses, causes indefinite road closure in Northern Alberta county

Cause of bridge collapse unknown, but replacement won't be installed until 2023 at the earliest.

ST. PAUL/ELK POINT, Alta - A bridge along a County of St. Paul road has collapsed and is causing an indefinite road closure between St. Paul and Elk Point.

It is unknown why the bridge, located at Range Road 73, between Township Road 570A and TWP 570, failed, according to Director of Public Works with the County of St. Paul. The location is just south of a well-known thorough between the communities, known as Armistice Road.

"The bridge will be inaccessible until a new bridge can be installed," said Reid, on Friday. "The size and span of this bridge is too large for the County to attempt a temporary fix."

The bridge will need engineering and designed prior to tendering the project.

"We don’t expect to see the replacement installed until 2023 at the earliest. The cost will be estimated once engineering is complete," said Reid.
