The BC Coroners Service has confirmed there have been multiple fatalities after a plane crashed the north-west corner of Gabriola Island.

Spokesperson Andy Watson tells PrinceGeorgeMatters that at approximately 6:30 p.m. tonight (Dec. 10), reports of a possible plane crash on Gabriola Island were received by local RCMP.

He says, through investigation, police are also confirming multiple fatalities from the crash.

"Because of the nature of plane crashes, this event will be investigated in partnership with the Transportation Safety Board, who have been notified and will be attending the scene on Dec. 11," an email reads.

"The crash scene will be held by the Gabriola RCMP until the arrival of the TSB."

Watson adds the BC Coroners Service was also notified of fatalities and is in the beginning stages of its fact-finding investigation to determine who, where, when and how the deceased "came to their sudden, unexpected deaths."

No other information will be released by RCMP or the BC Coroners Service tonight.
