MAYERTHORPE, Alta. – Mayerthorpe RCMP have made an arrest in the case of a fatal hit-and-run at the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation earlier this month.
According to an RCMP release, the Mayerthorpe RCMP and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a report of an unconscious male on Nikoodi Road at around 4:12 a.m. on Oct. 1.
Despite the efforts of EMS, the 16-year-old male youth — who was a resident of Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation — succumbed to his injuries.
Mayerthorpe RCMP conducted an investigation with the assistance of Western Alberta District General Investigation Services, and it is believed that the youth was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
On Oct. 17, the Mayerthorpe RCMP announced that they had made an arrest and an individual had appeared in court on Oct. 12.
The suspect, who is also a resident of the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, was then released on conditions and will be appearing in Mayerthorpe Provincial Court on Nov. 17.
Jason Delaney Alexis, 49, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death and obstruction of justice.
