BOW VALLEY – The Alberta Government has announced some financial relief for the hotel industry, which is struggling as a result of the COVID-19 public health crisis.

On Friday (March 27), the government announced it would delay the collection of the provincial tourism tax that applies to all room nights for hotel and lodging providers.

“We know Alberta’s tourism industry has been hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic," said President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Finance Travis Toews in a press release.

"This is a necessary addition to other recently announced measures. We will continue to support Albertans and Alberta businesses during this tumultuous time, and will continue to evaluate and expand our efforts where possible.”

The province estimated by delaying collection of the four per cent fee on hotel bills until Aug. 31, it would will free up $5 million for the industry.

The province said deferring the collection of corporate tax balances and instalment payments for businesses will free up an estimated $1.5 billion in funds.

In addition, the provincial government has frozen education property tax amounts at 2019 levels, as well as the ability to defer payments for six months. It also has given private-sector employers an opportunity to defer paying Workers’ Compensation Board premiums until 2021. A rebate will be offered for those who’ve already paid their premiums.
