CANMORE – Canada Post is investigating after multiple community mailboxes throughout Canmore were damaged or tampered with in July.

Canada Post spokesperson Phil Legault said in an email to the Outlook that the federal agency is aware of incidents taking place in the community at some mailboxes.

“The incidents were reported to police, postal inspectors and local operations,” Legault wrote. “As there is an investigation, we cannot provide further details.

“The mailboxes are in the process of being repaired and service will resume as soon as possible.”

Legault said residents affected can temporarily pick up their mail at the post office downtown at 801 Eighth St.

Canmore RCMP Sgt. Stan Andronyk said damage to the mailboxes occurred between July 20 and 23 throughout the community and about 10 locations were affected.

While RCMP are investigating, Andronyk said it is difficult to determine what, if anything, has been taken from the mailboxes.

“If anybody has, or suspect they have, had mail stolen they can report it,” he said.
Andronyk said residents of the community can always report suspicious activity to 911.
