Canmore resident and first year Ranger Anya Morgan has been appointed to the Girl Guides of Canada national youth council.

CANMORE – A local Canmore girl will soon get a national platform to raise issues and concerns that effect today’s youth after being selected by Girl Guides of Canada to join its national youth council.

Anya Morgan, who has been a Girl Guide for the past 10 years, said she was surprised to be selected.

“I found it a bit hard to believe at first,” said Morgan, who is in Grade 10 at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy.

“There were a lot of applicants and I didn’t see it coming, but I was really happy to get this opportunity.”

She said she hopes to use her position on the council to raise issues about mental health and to make Girl Guides more inclusive and supportive of Canada’s Indigenous people.

“The entire aim of the council is to represent the youth from across Canada, so I want to bring issues that impact today’s youth to the attention of the organization,” said Morgan.

She said mental health and the stigma that surrounds it is one of the biggest issues she wants to raise.

“We as youth can see it everywhere,” said Morgan, who herself has battled with her own mental health in the past.

Morgan will join 13 other girls from across Canada to discuss these issues and more over the next year.
