CANMORE – Police are continuing to search for a man after they conducted a traffic stop and found handguns and drugs early Saturday morning (March 6).

In a Saturday release, the RCMP said a traffic stop was made after two vehicles were seen travelling together on Highway 1 at about 3 a.m.

The police investigation found handguns and drugs in one vehicle, while the second vehicle – a rented Hyundai SUV – fled the area and was later found abandoned on 7th Avenue in Canmore.

Additional weapons were found in the Hyundai SUV and the driver fled on foot, police said.

Sgt. Stan Andronyk, of the RCMP Canmore detachment, said it was likely the person has left the area, but they're continuing to seek assistance in finding the suspect.

The police issued a warning Saturday afternoon when the man was believed to have been in downtown Canmore. There was an increase in police presence, but there was no concern for public safety.

According to the RCMP, the man is of middle-eastern descent and in his late 20s to mid 30s. He is of a short stature and slender build, was wearing a white hoodie, camouflage pyjama pants and white shoes. The man was last seen at 9 a.m. when he fled away on foot and once more in the downtown area at about 11 a.m.

Anyone who encounters the man should avoid approaching him and immediately call 911.
