CANMORE – Fortis Alberta is investigating a power outage affecting parts of downtown Canmore on Thursday afternoon (April 25).

The outage began at 1:40 p.m. and Fortis manager of communications Alana Antonelli said originally 3,000 customers were affected, but the company has managed to reroute power from other sources and as of 4:30 p.m 587 customers remained without power.

Antonelli said Fortis crews understand the nature of the power outage, but still have to determine exactly where it is.

"There is an underground fault somewhere downtown and because it is underground and the busy location, it is difficult for us to pinpoint exactly where the fault has occurred," she said. "As soon as we can pinpoint that location, we will be able to get the majority of those [without power] back on."

The current estimated time for the power to be restored is 6:30 p.m.
