CANMORE – One of Canmore’s most popular trails will remain closed for upgrades and repairs until further notice.

It’s the fourth time Alberta Parks has pushed back the opening date of Ha Ling Trail, which closed on April 9, 2018.

According to an Alberta Parks public advisory, the trail will remain closed because of incomplete construction work from last fall.

“Due to the lack of hazard visibility and wayfinding issues, Ha Ling Peak will remain closed until further notice until construction completion to ensure the safety of Alberta Parks users,” states the advisory.

The trail was initially expected to be closed intermittently last summer, however at the beginning of August, Alberta Parks announced a full closure of the trail to allow heavy equipment and crews to work in the area.

The closure was supposed to be lifted by August 30, however the provincial agency extended it to the first week of October, stating heavy smoke from nearby wildfires made it unsafe for contractors to carry out their work.

At the time, Alberta Parks said the “project was on track,” however an early snowfall in late September quashed those plans. On Oct. 9 Alberta Parks announced the trail would remain closed for the winter.

With the snow now beginning to recede, Alberta Parks issued an update on April 3 stating the trail would be closed until further notice.

Several emails to the province and phone calls to the project manager were not returned.

The full mountain closure means access is not permitted on hiking trails and climbing routes on Ha Ling.

The nearby trails to Upper and Lower Grassi Lakes reopened to the public in mid-October after the gabion wall that supports Spray Lakes Road below Whiteman’s Pond was repaired.
