CANMORE – A natural avalanche has closed Highway 742 between Goat Pond and the Canmore Nordic Centre on Sunday (March 14).

The road, also known as the Spray Lakes Road or Smith Dorrien Trail, connects the Bow Valley and the community of Canmore with nearby provincial parks in Kananaskis Country.

During the winter, the road is regularly closed for avalanche control work by Kananskis Public Safety on the peak that forms the east end of Rundle Mountain.

The notice of the road closure was issued by the Alberta Parks website just past noon on Sunday. It is unclear at this time if there were vehicles on the road when the slide occurred. The Outlook has reached out to Alberta Environment and Parks for more details.

The estimated time of reopening, once the road has been clear of debris, is 9 p.m.
