The Shifra Centre for Wellness in Cochrane, recently opened a new clinic in Canmore.

CANMORE – Women in the Bow Valley who wish to deliver their baby with the help of a midwife will now be able to do so thanks to a new clinic in Canmore.

Located only steps away from the Canmore General Hospital, the satellite clinic opened its doors mid-June and offers free clinics for pregnant women every Monday.

“We’ve actually been caring for women in Canmore for the past year, it’s just the women had to drive to Cochrane, where now we actually have a space in Canmore so that women are able to stay in their community for their prenatal and postpartum care,” said Shianna Pace, owner of the Shifra Centre for Wellness in Cochrane, which owns the satellite clinic in Canmore.

With seven midwives who travel throughout the region, she said her organization helps deliver about 190 babies a year, including 20 babies in Canmore.

The aim of the service is to offer women experiencing low-risk pregnancies a choice to give birth in the comfort of their own home.

According to Pace, her organization cares for women from the beginning of their pregnancies, typically around the 10-week mark, all the way through their prenatal care, labor and birth. They also provide six weeks of post partum care.

The service is partly funded through a new three-year agreement announced by the former NDP government in March between Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Association of Midwives.

The aim of the agreement is to increase the number of midwifery-assisted births across the province, particularly in rural and Indigenous communities.

“We are the only care providers that can offer women a home birth, so it’s really important that women have choice,” said Pace, adding they have an Indigenous midwife who is passionate about caring for women in Morley.

The clinic is located at 1205 Bow Valley Trail in office 205. Women should call the organization’s Cochrane office at 403-932-3176 to book an appointment in Canmore.
