Rocky Mountain Soap hand sanitizer recalled due to labelling issue

Health Canada requires products that use technical-grade ethanol to be clearly labelled and early batches of the Rocky Mountain Soap Co.'s hand sanitizer did not, leading to the recent recall

CANMORE – Health Canada has issued a recall for Canmore-based Rocky Mountain Soap Co.'s lemongrass scented hand sanitizer.

The federal agency has issued a number of recalls for hand sanitizer during the pandemic, and added five more to the list earlier this month including the one from Rocky Mountain Soap.

In a statement provided to the Outlook, co-owner and CEO Karina Birch explained the recall only applies to the first batch the company manufactured and is related to the labelling of the product and one of the ingredients that was used early in the pandemic.
"When the pandemic hit, Health Canada approved the use of technical-grade ethanol to manufacture hand sanitizer products," Birch said.

"Select batches of the Lemongrass Nomad Hand Sanitizer, produced between April – June 2020, included a diluted amount of this ingredient. The products in the recall were tested by a third-party lab and meets the safety standards of Health Canada.

"Since then, our sanitizers have been made with pharmaceutical grade ethanol and therefore do not require additional information on the label and are not part of the recall."

According to Health Canada's website, the affected lots or serial numbers for the hand sanitizer are 04092001 to 06082001.

"The affected lots contain technical grade ethanol which may pose a risk to health and were sold before receiving Health Canada approval," stated the government's recall website. "The affected lots are missing risk statements on the label."

In a Facebook post, the company stated any bottles from the affected batch can be returned and replaced. The company has also created a page on its website to answer questions about the recall.

"We’re really sorry for the inconvenience and want you to know we are serious about the safety and quality of our products," stated the company on social media.
