CANMORE – The Town of Canmore has officially closed two of its popular recreation facilities in response to COVID-19.

On its Facebook page, the Town of Canmore said it made the decision to take additional action in wake of the increasing cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Alberta and, effective immediately, closed Elevation Place and the Canmore Recreation Centre.

“The Town of Canmore has made the decision to take additional action in response to COVID-19. As of 11 a.m. on March 16, Elevation Place and the Canmore Recreation Centre are closed until further notice,” the post said.

“Although this action is not required by the Government of Alberta, we believe that it is the right decision to proactively reduce opportunities for spreading the virus. All Elevation Place memberships will be suspended until further notice (members do not need to take any action).”

On its website, the Town lists additional closures, postponements and cancellations. These include events such as Art Walk in the Woods, the Rec Centre’s grand re-opening and some Bow Valley Parent Link activities such as its farewell celebration and Let’s Get Active.

The Town activated its emergency coordination centre (ECC) on Friday (March 13) and said it is proactively trying to stop the spread.

“This means that we are meeting daily to proactively implement measures to try to slow the spread of COVID-19,” its website said.

“The Town of Canmore is actively working with the local healthcare authority to protect our community and is prepared to implement protocols as risk increases in Canmore.”

In addition, the Town is looking to set up a call centre for community inquiries and encourages community members to stay updated on its webpage.
