UPDATED: Town of Canmore sees studded tire rebate completely sold out under a week

“More people that are cycling, or walking, or taking transit helps create additional road capacity and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions so it’s a double win.”

CANMORE – Following in the Town of Banff’s footsteps, Canmore has officially sold out its new studded bike tire rebate for residents initiative in six days.

The program, which officially began on Wednesday (Dec. 11) and was fully sold out by Tuesday (Dec. 17), gave 50 Canmorites who purchased studded bike tires on or after the official launch date the ability to apply for a rebate of $50 per tire, with a maximum rebate of $100 per person.

“Encouraging residents to take some trips in modes other than vehicles is part of our integrated transportation plan, as well as our climate change action plan,” said Amy Fournier, the climate change specialist for the Town of Canmore.

“The more people that are cycling, or walking, or taking transit helps create additional road capacity and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, so it’s a double win.”

The program, officially approved on Dec. 3, had a budget of $5,000, which Fournier said meant limited availability to apply for the rebate.

“This is the first time we’re trying this, we know in Banff it was really popular, so we weren’t sure what to expect,” she said.

As of Tuesday (Dec. 17), Fournier said the program had been fully subscribed.

"For the majority of people, this was the first time they purchased studded tires. A few people were already regular winter cyclists, but most have been cycling in the winter only occasionally, or when there is no snow on the roads," said Fournier.

"From this, it appears that the incentive achieved the intended goal of encouraging more people to cycle more often. I received comments from residents when they sent in their application forms such as, 'I’ve been wanting to get these for ages but couldn’t afford them,' or 'this is so great, with all the snow I’ve been driving my car more than I’ve wanted to these days,' and 'this will help with my health and safety while riding. Well done.'"

Fournier said the rebate program is a result of community feedback.

“We’ve had a number of people throughout the year requesting and contacting us with interest,” she said.

The Town of Banff launched its studded bike tire rebate program for the first time in 2018 and has continued it again into next year.
