LETTER: I enjoyed reading Jim Gough’s letter in the Nov. 23 Outlook, “Freedom doesn’t survive in isolation.” It was very insightful and thought-provoking. I found a couple of passages to be of particular interest, with regard to the path taken by totalitarian governments in waiting.

“This is what it costs to maintain the infrastructure that we have and the decisions that have been made over time to create or result in this gap have been decisions in the short-term to decrease an annual property tax increase,”

A pair of flood mitigation projects are recommended to be pushed back to cover the remaining costs of potentially finishing Cougar Creek next year.

“My approach is to give it 100 per cent and not leave anything behind."

“It is certainly a trade-off and ideally we’d like to be spending the monies on processing and transporting recyclables and food waste,”

“It’s a double-edged sword. Yes, we’re looking at a very high cost in order to deliver this service to our community, which is affected by our past decisions and regulatory changes, but ultimately it means as a community we’re cleaning up our mess and not making it someone else’s problem downstream.”

LETTER: In regards to Canmore’s mayor's participation at a two-day meeting at the Local Climate Action Summit in Dubai, UAE, which is 11,475 kilometres away, is inexcusable.
