Province identifies 22 new cases of COVID-19

ALBERTA – Hospitalization rates for COVID-19 remain low in Alberta, and another person has died due to the virus.

The province reported in a press release Tuesday (May 26) that 45 people are currently hospitalized due to the virus, five of whom are in intensive care units.

There have been 22 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 identified in Alberta, bringing the provincial total to 714 active cases.

An additional Albertan has died, bringing the provincial total of COVID-19 deaths to 139.

A total of 6,048 people have recovered from the virus.

The province is encouraging Albertans to download the ABTraceTogether app to help enhance contract tracing of the virus to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Using the app is voluntary and helps in tracking the spread of the virus in Alberta.

Contact tracing of the virus will be essential for Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy. To date 632 cases of COVID-19 have unknown sources.

Albertans can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 by practicing social distancing and good hygiene including washing hands regularly and coughing or sneezing into your elbow.

Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19, which include cough, fever, sore throat, shortness of breath and runny nose are eligible for testing. An online self-assessment tool to set up a COVID-19 test.

A total of 221,173 Albertans have been tested for the virus, including 2,982 tests that have been completed in the last 24-hours.

The next COVID-19 update with Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw will take place on Wednesday (May 27).
