Over the past couple of years, the trend-cycle has been refreshing at record speed and trend-spotting has become a serious art form. When it comes to interior design, 2022 already has some blatant trends; while some may not stand the test of time, others are teeing up to define the decade. Whether you’re looking to spruce up your home or you’re simply hoping to keep a finger on the pulse of what’s trendy, this article should help.
As we’ve all been living through a pandemic that has forced us to spend a whole lot of quality time with the interiors of our homes, many of the 2022 interior design trends pay homage to spending some serious hours in one’s home and wanting it to be as beautiful, functional, and comfortable as possible.
Bringing the Outside in
The pandemic gave a lot of people a green thumb, inspiring them to bring the outdoors in and invite a few (or a few dozen) plant babies into their living spaces. Beyond just houseplants, the trend of embracing nature indoors has extended to decor and we’re seeing things such as stoneware, marble, raw materials, and imperfect accents. This is also reflected in interior colour pallets with a lot of browns, greens, and more natural colours becoming extremely popular.
Embracing The Curve
While past trends leaned heavily towards jagged edges and angular design, we are seeing a huge push towards all things curved. Things like rounded edges on couches and chairs or waterfall-style tables and accent furniture are taking centre stage. The curved furniture trend is plucked right from the 70s and after falling out of trend for decades, it's officially back in action.
Multi-Functional Spaces
The pandemic has made our worlds pretty small, forcing us to get the most out of the space we have. For some, that means your bedroom, gym, and office all being one and the same. After a couple of years making do, people are beginning to really look critically at their spaces and make them not only as functional as they can be but as multi-functional as they can be. With this trend, we will see things like elevated organization, Murphy beds, enhanced at-home workspaces, and more mindful at-home fitness spaces. No space will go under-utilized!
Elevating The Outdoors
Another big focus moving into 2022 is outdoor furnishings. People are really emphasizing stylish outdoor living spaces that are just as comfortable and inviting as your typical living room. Rather than just getting a couple of chairs and a table, we are seeing more intentionally-designed outdoor spaces for hosting and spending quality time in.
High-Tech Homes
The shift to smart homes and more high-tech homes has been a long time coming, but it has certainly sped up recently. Things like smart speakers, heating, and cooling controlled by devices, ring cameras, robot vacuumed, and the like are becoming completely commonplace. As we lean far more towards the digital world, our homes are beginning to follow suit.
Granny Style
Another style theme you may have noticed recently might remind you of your grandmother's home. There is a huge lean towards all things vintage, also being referred to as “grandmillennial” style. This includes a lot of floral patterns, printed wallpapers, a little bit of glamour, and a whole lot of maximalism. These spaces feature curated clutter and a familiar comfort that we all know and love.
Very Peri
Last but not least, Pantone’s Colour of the Year is Very Peri, a beautiful violet colour that we can expect to see popping up all over the place in 2022.
