WATER VALLEY – A person was killed in a suspected bear attack Tuesday (May 25) near a home to the southwest of Water Valley, about 40 kilometres north of Cochrane.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife received a call from RCMP at about 7 p.m. Tuesday (May 25) regarding what appears to be a fatal bear attack on private property at a residence southwest of Water Valley.

The deceased individual went for a walk on their property and was later found on one of their trails.

Fish and Wildlife officers are currently conducting an investigation of the incident and have set up traps in the vicinity of the attack.

Officers are still working to determine the identity of the bear, but noted a grizzly bear and a cub were seen in the vicinity of the incident. During the sighting, the sow was exhibiting aggressive behaviour.

The suspected bear attack comes three weeks after a 59-year-old man – a former Canmore resident – was running on Moss Trail near Waiparous Creek when he was attacked by a bear. David Lertzman, who worked as a senior instructor Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, passed away following the bear attack after he fell from a 300-metre high embankment

Alberta Fish and Wildlife are reminding individuals it is extremely important to be cognizant of potential animals when travelling outside.

When spending time outside, it is recommended people travel in groups, and bring animal deterrents, such as bear spray and noise makers.

If you encounter a bear, stay calm, back away, stay close to your group and seek safety, like a car or building.
