EDITORIAL: No matter if it’s 10, 20 or 30 years, the 2013 floods will always be a part of the area’s history for better or worse. But when people look back in years to come, their determination and resolve will always be remembered.

“It’s still a work in progress, but I’d say there’s at least half of it operational now,” said Saundi Stevens, a wildlife management specialist for Banff, Yoho and Kootenay national parks.

“At that point, between ourselves and the BC Wildfire Service, we decided to classify this fire out or extinguished. Given the location where we can see it relatively well from the Kootenay viewpoint and other locations, we will continue to monitor it.”

“It looks like fairly wide-spread precipitation, although some of the weather forecasts last week showed some precipitation throughout our mountain parks, and we didn’t see much, but this one certainly seems like a larger change in weather event, so hopefully we will see a decrease in fire danger.”

Mere minutes after making a victory speech on election night May 29, with what looked to be a locked win, the riding’s seat was swept from under the UCP incumbent as advance and mobile votes finished tallying to put NDP candidate Sarah Elmeligi ahead by 199 votes, according to Elections Alberta unofficial results.

EDITORIAL: The dust has settled, and the provincial election is over.

Both the UCP’s Miranda Rosin and NDP’s Sarah Elmeligi claimed victory in the Banff-Kananaksis riding shortly before midnight on May 29 election day, with fewer than 200 votes separating the two.
