The Canadian Avalanche Foundation (CAF) – a separate branch of the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) which raises funds for Canadian Avalanche Centre initiatives – is hosting its annual Fundraising Gala event next Thursday (March 10) at the CP Rail Pavilion in Calgary.
Kicking off at 4:30 p.m., the event will include hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and a presentation by this year’s keynote speaker, filmmaker Malcolm Sangster of Sherpas Cinema, producers of The Fine Line avalanche education film and numerous other backcountry skiing and snowboarding films.
Money raised through this and other events, including the CAF’s annual HLH Memorial Golf Tournament, helps support various CAC avalanche awareness initiatives, including public avalanche bulletins, public avalanche education programs and research for projects that support public avalanche safety.
Last year, the CAF, a federally registered charity, raised more than $110,000 which helped support the Canadian Avalanche Centre’s regular avalanche bulletins, the University of Calgary’s NSERC Chair in avalanche research, public safety programs of the Centre d’Avalanche de la Haute Gaspésie in Quebec, public safety initiatives in Newfoundland and the Craig Kelly Scholarship Fund for individuals training to be avalanche professionals and/or mountain guides.
Tickets for the fundraising event are $75. To purchase yours or for more information, visit www.avalanche.ca/caf
