RCMP have charged a man with stealing fuel from parked vehicles.

Brandon Wegner, from Penhold, Alta., was charged with possession of property obtained by crime exceeding $5,000, theft over $5,000, possession of a weapon and failure to comply with an undertaking on Saturday (June 23).

The 27-year-old was arrested by members of the Canmore RCMP after they located a vehicle and trailer matching the description of one involved with a series of fuel and thefts from vehicles at the Sunshine Village earlier in June.

Last week, Banff RCMP reported  between June 13 and 21, suspects drilled holes into fuel tanks of vehicles parked at the Redearth Creek and Sunshine Village parking lots. Other items such as metal gates and ski racks were also allegedly taken.

Wegner was released by a justice of the peace and is set to appear next in Canmore Provincial Court on July 25.

“Communication between law enforcement agencies is a key to the Crime Reduction strategy within the Bow Valley,” said Banff Staff Sergeant Michael Buxton-Carr in a press release. “Timely intelligence-sharing allowed our patrol units to recover valuable property and to protect our rural communities against further harm."
