A fire on the second floor balcony of a staff accommodation home in Teepee Town resulted in $100,000 worth of damage and left several families without a home.

Canmore Fire Department received a call for a house fire behind Chez Francois restaurant shortly before 6 p.m.

Once the fire broke out, the fire department was on scene within two minutes, quickly knocking down the flames that threatened to engulf the large balcony and roof.

“The fire was contained to the outside rear deck,” said Deputy Fire Chief Scott Wing. “We had a good knock down… rapid intervention and organization helped put out the fire.”

The fire was contained to the rear of the duplex, as the front of the building appeared unscathed.

Wing said he was unsure if anyone was in the apartment when the blaze broke out, however, there were no reported injuries. Neighbours said there were four separate apartments in the duplex, which was built about 15 years ago using a concrete frame.

Police and emergency crews closed down the street and fire crews used a thermal infrared camera to find hotspots in the building. Wing said the fire did not spread to the inside of the house.

The house served as staff accommodation for several businesses on Bow Valley Trail, including two hotels.

At press time, the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
