Guide offers prospective employees housing options

The Bow Valley’s Job Resource Centre has published a resource guide for prospective employees to gain a better understanding of what types of staff housing exist locally.

The Bow Valley’s Job Resource Centre has published a resource guide for prospective employees to gain a better understanding of what types of staff housing exist locally.

The last time a staff housing guide was produced by the Job Resource Centre was in the late ’90s and director Michel Dufresne noted the valley has changed a great deal since then.

Dufresne said after over 15 years since the last guide was published, the Job Resource Centre wanted to produce an updated resource to help employees who are looking for work in Lake Louise, Canmore or Banff that includes accommodation.

“There is a huge amount of people coming here every year, summer or winter, to look for jobs,” he said. “And they all have different needs when it comes to housing. This is the first level of housing for a lot of people.”

Staff housing is often the first housing that newcomers to the valley live in when they obtain employment. Dufresne said the staff housing guide shows the average cost for staff housing is $405 a month for a single person. He said that is less than half the price of shared housing currently available for rent in Canmore and Banff, which averages over $900 a month.

“It is a better starting place,” he said, adding most people who come to the job resource centre are looking for information on accommodation as well as employment.

Dufresne said he estimates the guide captures 80 per cent of staff housing available in the valley, which includes most major employers – 54 in all representing 97 businesses.

The guide sets out what types of bedrooms are available with each staff housing option, amenities, demographics, location and ratings by employees who live there.

The guide represents 5,000 units of housing throughout the Bow Valley and 8,500 jobs in the peak season.

It was made possible as the result of a grant from the Government of Alberta.
