FAIRMONT, BC – Highway 93 is closed after a rockslide covered the two lanes near Fairmont Hot Springs Thursday (Dec. 5) morning.

On Friday (Dec. 5) at 8:21 a.m., Drive BC tweeted the road was closed between Dutch Creek Road and Westside Road with no detour available.

"An earth slope failure occurred early this morning at the hoodoos, closing Highway 93 in both directions approximately four kilometres south of Fairmont Hot Springs, between Dutch Creek Road and Westside Road ... approximately 200 cubic metres of rock, including two large earth boulders, fell down on the road and some trees came down the slope," B.C. Minister and Transportation officials wrote in a statement.

Officials said Mainroad East Kootenay, the maintenance contractor, arrived quickly to secure the scene and once the geotechnical assessment determined the scene is safe with no further risk of rockfall, the maintenance contractor would clear the road.

BC Transportation and Infrastructure confirmed there were no injuries in the incident and said crews were busy working clearing the route.

At 4:38 p.m. Drive BC tweeted Highway 93 was re-opened and operating with a single lane, alternating traffic. Motorists are told to expect heavy delays and to drive carefully.
