The search for a hiker missing for 10 days in Highwood Pass was on hold Wednesday as searchers regrouped to decide what to do next.

Kevin Kennedy, 59, went missing, Aug. 21, when his wife dropped him off to hike solo in the Pocaterra Cirque/Grizzly Col area off Highway 40.

On Wednesday (Aug. 31), Kananaskis RCMP Cpl. Jane Boehr said helicopters, conservation officers and search and rescue personnel on foot had continued the search until Tuesday.

Boehr said tips have been coming in since Kennedy was reported lost, but none have panned out thus far. “Some tips were discredited, some were simply nothing solid,” she said.

“After a point, when you’ve covered everything, you need to have a discussion between police and public safety and a conversation with the family to decide what to do next.”

According to Boehr, there is no hard and fast rule on how long a search would continue; each is based on its own merits.
