Lafarge buys land for future staff housing

Lafarge, the multinational cement corporation, bought about 10 acres of land in the hamlet of Exshaw to use for future staff accommodations.

The land, purchased from the MD of Bighorn in late 2010, is located along Exshaw Creek, from Highway 1A along Windridge Road.

“This land acquisition demonstrates we’re committed to a long-term vision for this plant,” said Joel Taguchi, community relations manager for Lafarge at Exshaw. Basically, he added, this is just one piece of the long-term plan for the plant and the future employees they need to work there.

With a large number of employees reaching retirement age and the recent modernization of the plant, Lafarge is taking this step now to plan for the next generation of plant employees.

“At this time, we don’t have any firm plans on when the development will happen or what the final plans will look like,” said Taguchi, adding that engineering or planning hasn’t even been approached about this property.

With Lafarge undergoing a major modernization project, Taguchi said the development of any staff housing is not on the agenda at this time. “We had to acquire the land when it became available,” he said.

Although no plans have been drawn up, Taguchi assured that this property would not be turned into apartment units for young, single people. “Our preliminary vision is that they’ll be single family-type dwellings for employees,” he said.

Lafarge owns a number of empty residential lots in Exshaw, but none have been developed. The company has not been involved directly in staff housing since taking over the Exshaw cement plant in 1970.
