A suspect who attacked an RCMP officer with a needle and fled from police has been apprehended after being Tasered and shot by RCMP.

The man was taken into custody in Harvie Heights, a hamlet just outside Canmore and the east park gates, after police used a Taser to subdue him as he continued to use the needle in a threatening manner.

The suspect is receiving medical treatment for an apparent gunshot wound to the lower body that does not appear to be life threatening.

Officials indicated the investigation of the incident will be handed over to the Alberta Serious Response Team (ASIRT).

The man had been shot earlier in Banff after being pulled over by RCMP on Banff Avenue.

Shortly after noon, RCMP attempted to stop a silver GMC Envoy on the Trans-Canada Highway outside Banff.

The vehicle would not stop and proceeded to drive through the town site at slow speeds. It was eventually stopped on Banff Ave. and an RCMP member attempted to grab the keys from the ignition when the suspect tried to stab him with a hypodermic needle.

At that point the officer fired one round from his service pistol into the vehicle.

The suspect then fled in the vehicle heading eastbound on the Trans Canada Highway.

Police pursued but called off the chase quickly due to danger to other users on the highway. It was reported at some point the vehicle was travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes.

Traffic was stopped at one point to reduce the danger to the public.

The suspect managed to avoid at least one spikebelt but his vehicle was disabled by another near Harvie Heights.

The man continued to drive through the hamlet in the damaged vehicle until he was stopped. He exited the vehicle holding the needle in a threatening manner and was Tasered by police.

RCMP have called in a search dog with Parks Canada to search sections on the side of the TCH for objects the suspect may have thrown from his vehicle as he was fleeing.
