The Town of Canmore is getting ready to roll out recycling into more neighbourhoods of the community.

Supervisor of solid waste services Tristan Holmes presented details earlier in June to council on phase two of the enhanced recycling program.

Having recycling bins throughout the town of Canmore has been on the books for several years that has been hampered by permanently locating a waste transfer station and material recycling facility.

However, now the municipality has secured access to its Wastewater Treatment Plant for that purpose and it can move forward with recycling for the entire community.

“As we move into phase two and community wide implementation 85 containers will be installed in town,” Holmes said.

In places where there are two bear-proof garbage bins he said one will be removed and replaced with a recycling bin that has three streams for collection: mixed paper, mixed glass and plastics and metals. Places with one bin will see a second recycling one installed.

Holmes added bins removed will be reused and retrofitted resulting in a cost savings for the project.

Phase one of the enhanced recycling program began last summer when the neighbourhood of Eagle Terrace had bins installed.

That neighbourhood has seen an average of 20 per cent diversion as a result of the bins being in place.

The first neighbourhoods to see the bins installed will be those where the recycling trailer is located on weekends. After that those neighbourhood near a recycling depot and that have the trailer on weekdays will have bins.

Total cost for phase two of the project in terms of capital requirements is $938,000 and operational costs are $97,500.
