New superintendent annouced for CRPS

Canadian Rockies Public Schools have announced that Christopher MacPhee has been appointed as the new superintendent of schools and chief executive officer for the school division.

Canadian Rockies Public Schools have announced that Christopher MacPhee has been appointed as the new superintendent of schools and chief executive officer for the school division.

MacPhee will begin as of June 1 after long-time superintendent Brian Callaghan announced his retirement last fall.

Board chair Kim Bater said in a press release response to the job position was tremendous, with applications coming from many experienced leaders in eight provinces.

“Mr. MacPhee was chosen from this highly qualified group of candidates,” Bater said. “The board felt that Chris was clearly the best match to the ideal candidate profile that was built by staff, school councils, students and the board.”

“We believe that Chris’ vision for a collaboratve learning community between schools, families and the community will build on the mission of Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) to empower our students to be their finest – today and tomorrow.”

CRPS has been working on its Inspiring Hearts and Minds strategy for education in the Bow Valley since a 2007/2008 planning process that involved extensive community consultation.

Bater said MacPhee will continue that work and has talked about plans on how to deepen that approach.

“Canadian Rockies Public Schools has an excellent reputation in all aspects of education,” said MacPhee. “I am extremely proud and humbled to represent the division as its next superintendent of schools and look forward to continuing the work that honours the proud traditions and successes of the past while embracing the challenges of the present.”

Originally from Cape Breton, MacPhee has worked as a teacher in the Yukon, an educational psychologist for the Labrador East Roman Catholic School Board in Newfoundland, an educational assessor/resource teacher and became a district principal with the Rocky Mountain School District in 2002.

Most recently, he has held positions as assistant, deputy and acting superintendent with Wild Rose Public Schools for the past six years.

He has a bachelor of science in marine biology and bachelor and master of education degrees from Dalhousie University.
