Canmore RCMP have issued a warning to the public about a recent spate of vehicle break-ins occurring within town and on trailheads.

According to Cpl. Darleen White, the vehicle break-ins have occurred at various locations around town, particularly in parking lots, and started happening earlier this month.

“School’s out, there’s more tourists, so there’s more activity,” White said, adding it’s not usual for this time of year, however, people leaving their car doors unlocked has always been a problem.

In most cases, the perpetrators are either smashing windows or prying car doors open and stealing electronics, wallets and money, she said.

“If you see somebody suspicious give us a call,” the corporal said. “The main thing is to not leave any valuables in the vehicles and especially not out in the open. And lock your vehicles.”

Police are unsure if it’s the same people who are responsible for recent break-ins in town, nor do they have any leads on possible suspects at this time.

The RCMP is asking the public to call 678-5516 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they have information.
