Cidnee Wind made the request of council in January to consider amending the Land Use Bylaw to prohibit RVs, fifth wheels, trailers and other recreational vehicles on public streets and private driveways for anything more than loading and unloading.

Last week, council stopped short of giving administration direction to make such an amendment.

Instead, local politicians have chosen to wait and see if more than just one person has an issue with the current situation as part of the LUB rewrite process expected this spring.

“If there are considerations like this that we want to add (to the LUB) that’s the time and place,” said Mayor Ron Casey. “If this is truly a global issue for people the public hearings are the adequate opportunity to bring that forward.”

Throughout 2010, the Town’s planning department has been working on a comprehensive rewrite of the bylaw with first reading expected this spring to be followed by public hearings.

Councillor John Borrowman said he has heard from a lot of RV owners since the presentation to council last month.

“We all know there is one main concern if we try (this),” Borrowman said. “We force RV owners into storage off property and there is nowhere in Canmore really to do that.

“The other issue is enforcement.”

Manager of Bylaw Services Greg Burt said currently bylaws prohibit RVs from parking on public streets between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Burt said the purpose of the restriction is to prevent people from living or camping on streets.

As well, the bylaw prohibits living in an RV on private property.

“We do not police a lot of it unless we receive complaints,” he said, adding there have been less than a handful of complaints over the last 12 months.
