BANFF – The Job Resource Centre’s spring hiring fair has set a new record for jobs available, increasing from 350 last spring to over 500 this year.

Thursday’s (May 3) event had hundreds of applicants vying for jobs at most of Banff’s top hospitality and tourism businesses.

“That’s 150 more (jobs) on the table. That’s not how many jobs are going to be available this summer, though, because between now and the busy season there are probably 2,000 jobs to be filled,” said Michel Dufresne, director of the Job Resource Centre.

The next hiring fair will be held in Canmore on May 15 from 2-4 p.m. at Elevation Place.

Dufresne said the Job Resource Centre has been more effective in drawing employers to its hiring fairs, which has had benefits for both businesses and potential employees.

Of 500 jobs available, 400 will be filled by next week as a result of the fair.

“The reason people love the job fair is because people can talk to three or four (employers) in one swoop,” he said.

“We have job seekers who are a little gun-shy so it’s harder for them to reach out individually to employers, but here they line up, give their résumé and they get to an interview on the spot.”
