Storm causes campground evacuation

One hundred campers were relocated from Johnston Canyon to Tunnel Mountain after a major storm struck the area, Thursday (June 8).

One hundred campers were relocated from Johnston Canyon to Tunnel Mountain after a major storm struck the area, Thursday (June 8).
According to Parks Canada, the storm knocked down trees in the Johnston Canyon campground, on the trail and on sections of Bow Valley Parkway.
Highway 1A from its junction with the Trans-Canada, to Johnston Canyon campground, is closed until assessments are made.
No campground injuries were reported by Parks Canada, although two tents were damaged.
On Friday (June 9), Parks staff assessed the stability of remaining trees in the Johnston Canyon campground. Cleanup and other required work is ongoing and re-opening of the campground is yet to be determined.
