String of bike thefts prompts Canmore RCMP to ask for information

"We need statements and we need people to tell us so we can investigate it. We are continuing to investigate all [reported] thefts, but the best way to bring it to a successful conclusion is to contact us."

CANMORE – If you recently had your bike stolen, local RCMP would love to hear from you.

In a May 26 press release from the Canmore RCMP, officers said they have received at least 10 complaints about stolen bicycles since May 1, but have also noticed an increase in stolen bicycle complaints circulating on social media that have not been reported.

"We don't generate complaints based on Facebook comments," Sgt. Stan Andronyk with the Canmore RCMP said.

"We need statements and we need people to tell us so we can investigate it. We are continuing to investigate all [reported] thefts, but the best way to bring it to a successful conclusion is to contact us."

Last fall, the RCMP recovered more than 30 stolen bicycles after a call about a suspicious vehicle led to a valuable tip about organized crime.

John Gil Cortez, 24, was charged with 10 criminal offences after 32 bicycles were recovered, 12 from a stolen U-Haul and 20 more from a storage unit in Calgary – all suspected to be from the Canmore area.

While the most recent thefts are currently being investigated, RCMP said any additional information helps.

"Canmore RCMP are asking all citizens to report all thefts and any possible suspect information to police as they continue to investigate these crimes. Police would also like to remind the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, people or vehicles," Cpl. Sabrina Clayton with the Canmore RCMP wrote in a statement.

If anyone has information regarding this incident, the suspect(s) or any other criminal activity, please call Canmore RCMP at 403-678-5519. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or go online at Crimestoppers.ca.
