A snow safety expert with roots in Sunshine Village that extend back to the 1980s is rejoining the organization as manager of mountain operations.

Al Matheson will be rejoining the resort on Feb. 25, taking over a key position that oversees mountain operations and slope safety.

“Al has a wealth of knowledge and experience with Sunshine,” said Ken Derpak, vice-president of operations. “He is an outstanding addition to the team.”

Sunshine has been embroiled in a high profile labour dispute, with four long-term employees suing the resort for wrongful dismissal. Matheson was involved back in 1990 when Sunshine took over avalanche control from Parks Canada, and he continued to work in snow safety until 2000.
