Water regulatory upgrades to cost more

Regulatory upgrades to Canmore’s water system are going to cost the Town an extra $250,000. Council was asked to approve the additional funds for a total project cost of $850,000 at its last meeting in December.

Regulatory upgrades to Canmore’s water system are going to cost the Town an extra $250,000.

Council was asked to approve the additional funds for a total project cost of $850,000 at its last meeting in December.

Manager of public works Andreas Comeau said the scope of the upgrade project has not changed, but a number of studies to determine the final design details and budget indicate it would cost more.

The project, he added, was a result of a 2006 analysis by EPCOR to determ

ine what gaps existed between current practices at the water and wastewater treatment plant and Alberta Environment’s standards and guidelines.

“What happened was a number of studies and evaluations had to take place to determine what the final capital costs may be,” Comeau said. “We have determined to complete the project as originally scoped we need an additional $250,000.”

The project will increase the contact time of water with chlorine with a new baffling system at pumphouse one and two and installation of an air scrubber system.

Comeau said the air scrubber is needed because the plant uses chlorine gas and if a leak were to occur it could be a concern as the pumphouse is adjacent to residential areas.

The project also brings Canmore into compliance with regulatory requirements from Alberta Environment, which is needed to maintain its water licence.
