CANMORE – As kayaking season floats into the mountains, new or experience paddlers are encouraged to check out the local chapter.

With a goal to promote kayaking to local residents, the Bow Valley Kayak Club (BVKC) is offering instruction courses, new camps for kids and is continuing with club staples such as the beginner kayakers course, Zero to Hero.

“We worked hard on creating a variety of programs,” wrote Mark Hornyansky, the club’s president, in an email. “For parents looking to have their children learn to kayak during the summer break we have a day camp for beginner youth.”

For new paddlers, or those wanting to improve their kayak roll, and receive basic instruction, every Friday night the club holds pool sessions from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Elevation Place in Canmore.

The club has equipment for the public to use such as over 40 kayaks with paddles, PFDs, spray skirts and some wetsuits that members can use at no charge.

“As a club, we’re more about the masses,” said Robbie McAvoy, BVKC’s new coach.

“We’re currently running courses in May with another four in June, then when the kids are off in July, we have a program going on in the day time.”
