Summer shinny is alive and well in the Bow Valley thanks to a young hockey-loving entrepreneur.

Aaron Stanfield is the architect behind the Rocky Mountain Ball Hockey League, the fast-growing league based in Canmore.

In its second year of existence, the league has doubled in size from four to eight teams with interest growing in the league.

“I played ball hockey in Ontario and saw a need for it here. The town has been very helpful allowing me to do this and I’m definitely thinking about expanding to Banff,” Stanfield said.

Several local hockey teams have entered the league, which keeps the competition level high, however, Stanfield stresses it’s a recreational league.

“We have quite a few hockey teams and teams from Banff, but overall, it’s about having fun,” he said. “Every team is fairly even.”

Players must be 18 years old and both men and women play in the league.

Teams play a 20-game schedule with playoffs. Stanfield keeps stats for all of the players and will hand out trophies at the end of the year.

“I’ve had more time to plan this year, and hopefully we can have a few tournaments as well,” he said.

The no contact, no slapshot league plays four-on-four hockey at the Cougar Creek rink, but next year, the league could include some travel. He’s always listening to the teams for new ideas, and refs all of the games himself.

“Ideally, I’m hoping to expand to other towns in Alberta, with multiple leagues and divisions. Definitely we’ll expand to Banff next year.”
